Breaking!

As of September 1 Spotify stopped requiring a Facebook account.

They added a “sign up with an e-mail address” option to their sign-up page. No need for a Facebook account to sign up anymore.

The create an account using my e-mail address is somewhat hidden at the bottom of the signup page.

Not working? Here is an alternative

Looks like the sign up with an e-mail address is not working in all countries. Users from Finland have reported that they get redirected to the Facebook sign up.

Here are the instructions. It’s really easy stuff, I swear. In a few minutes, you’ll have a new Spotify account, based in your own country (as long as Spotify is available in your country), without any link whatsoever to your most reviled social network.

Step 1: You need to find a web proxy based in Germany. https://www.german-proxy.de/ works great. A web proxy just makes websites think you’re in a different country.

Anyone with issues with the proxy can try this one instead: https://www.proxy-service.de/

Step 2: Enter this address into the proxy site: https://www.spotify.com/de/signup/open/ (or copy and paste) and click Go.

Step 3: When the page loads, you’ll see a giant blue Facebook-like button. Right below it, there should be green text that says, “Account mit meiner Email Adresse erstellen.” Click on that text. It’s a link.

Step 4: Here’s where you enter your personal information.

1. Benutzername (username) – You can’t change this later, so choose something you want forever.

2. Email (Email address) – Enter your email address here.

3. Kennwort (password) – Choose a unique password, not something you use anywhere else. You can change it later.

4. Kennwort bestätigen (password re-entry) – Type your password again.

5. Postleitzahl (postal code) – Must be a 5-digit number. Pick one from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_postal_codes_in_Germany

6. Geschlecht (sex) - männlich=male, weiblich=female

7. Geburtsdatum (birthdate) – select the appropriate day/month/year

8. Make sure the checkbox beside “Hiermit akzeptiere ich Spotify’s Datenschutzrichtlinien und Nutzungsbedingungen” is selected. This is your acceptance of the Spotify user agreement.

9. Select the “Weiter” button. This will take you to the next page.

Step 5: This next page lets you pick which service you want to subscribe to. You MUST select Spotify Es ist gratis! (Spotify Free!). You must also select a payment method. Choose the one on the far right, which represents a Spotify Gift Card. Select the “Weiter” button again.

You now have a German Spotify account without being linked to Facebook. Hooray! Let’s get it changed to your actual country now.

Step 6: Open a new tab in your web browser. You can close the one using the web proxy, as that is no longer required. Go directly to: http://www.spotify.com/us ( if you are not in the US, you can change “us” to “uk,no,de,nl etc.” )

Step 7: Log into your newly-created account. The “log in” button is in the top right corner of the web page. Be sure to choose “Log in using Spotify details.”

Step 8: Once you are logged in, click on your username and select “Subscription” (Or click this link)

Step 9: Click  ”Change payment method” (Or click this link)

Step 10: Click “Change your country

Step 11: Now change your Country and zip code to your real country (ie: USA) and real zip code (ie: 90210). Choose a real payment method. Even if you continue using Spotify Free, you still have to do this. If you have a Paypal account, that’s the easiest way to go. (your account will not be charged, this step is for verification only)

Step 12: Depending on what payment method you choose, you’ll either have to enter your credit card info or log into your Paypal account. Do that, and accept the prompts that follow.

DONE! You now have a Spotify account that has NO link to Facebook!

(If it makes you feel more safe you can even remove the payment method now)

When you log into the desktop app for the first time, all your preferences are reset to the defaults. You’ll be prompted to connect to Facebook, but you can choose “No thanks.” I also suggest going into the Preferences menu and immediately un-checking all of the local files folders. But that’s me. If you want Spotify Premium, just hit the “Upgrade” button in the desktop software and go from there.

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD!!

Proxy sites aren’t always very secure. That’s why I told you to use a unique password. Now that your account is all set up the way you want it, don’t forget to change your damn password again. Just to be safe.

Follow steps 7 and 8 above to log into your account and edit your profile. This time, instead of editing your Country and zip code, just change your password. Easy stuff.

THE SHORT VERSION

1. Go to spotify.com using a German web proxy: https://www.german-proxy.de/

2. Create a new German account using the link BELOW the Facebook link.

3. Stop using the web proxy!

4. Log into your account and change the payment method than change the country to your real one.

5. Enjoy Spotify without needing a Facebook account.

6. Change your password. Just to be safe.

Thank you so much for this!!! This is exactly what I needed, the instructions are excellent and easy to follow. I owe you a beer!

  2. Jdawg

    Legend!

  3. Commander Shepard

I’m Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite guide in July 2012.

  4. Dom Ayers

Yeah dude this doesn’t work, there is no second link.

  5. I just checked. The link is still there. I guess you didn’t follow the instructions. You need to enter the URL in the proxy site like in the picture

  6. Michael

I’ve created the account but now I can’t change the country? The drop down box is greyed out?

  7. Leave the proxy site and try again starting with step 7.

  8. Michael

Didn’t work, tried on another computer & still the same problem. It has a link to a help section on how to change your country. Details that you can only change the country to the one which your IP originates from. Ugh, does it matter that mine is now set to Germany? Any other thoughts?

  9. If you have a German IP you cannot change the country to any other country if your account is registered as German. Is that what you mean? If you are in Australia you can only change the country to Australia if you are using an Australian IP and have a PayPal account or credit card that is registered in Australia.

  10. Michael

Got it to work, it came up with a slightly different process for me, once you choose to add a payment method it will then prompt you to change your country.

    Thanks for the guide!

  11. SirSimon

Thanks so much – great guide.

  12. dan

when i try to add a payment method all my cc’s get declined. any ideas? do my cc companies think this is some sort of a scam and they decline the charges?

  13. Hi Dan, No that’s not it. Spotify has altered the procedure of changing the country. I have updated the steps. Go to https://www.spotify.com/us/account/subscription/change-payment/#change-country or start again with step 8 in my updated post

  14. This is excellent, just opened up an account directly. Thanks for this guide!

  15. Nova

I didn’t need to pick a payment method, and I found a much less fussy way to change the country.

I signed up using a US zipcode (90078), picked free service, went to my account to check the country, found the greyed out box like people have mentioned.

Then, I used Spotify’s “contact us” form and asked to have my country changed to the US. (“Hi, I can’t change my country to California, USA. Can you please change it for me? Thank you!) I got an email saying they received my message, then a generic one with (useless) instructions on changing the country, then about an hour later received an email from an actual person saying they changed my country for me. :p

  16. Anonymous

Hans, thank you for this guide. Works like a charm and I am Facebook free in one more way!

  17. Guiltee

Well I feel almost a little guilty for using this workaround while it’s still active because you know they are going to close this hole when they finally find it.

That said, Facebook is a great social platform, useful and easy for connecting people – we get it – there’s no reason for it to be the key to the golden goose, though. I wouldn’t even mind linking to Fb if it didn’t take personally identifiable data but stuck with the aggregate.

Thanks for spotting this Spotify fix. :)

  18. emre

i m from turkey. It doesn’t work. Everytime i fill the information and hit the ‘weiter’ button, the same pages shows up. It doesn’t go to next page.

  19. mberger

emre – I had the same problem until I tried using a different German proxy site.

  20. Blanket

mberger, I’m having the same problem that you and emre had, and am having trouble finding a different German proxy site that will allow me secure access to follow the steps above. Any chance you can tell me which other German proxy site you used? Thanks for your help!

  21. Blanket

Okay, found a site that worked out, so you can disregard my question above. Thanks to all of you for your help with this, I appreciate it very much!

  22. Cynthia

Could you tell me the proxy site Blanket, because I’m having the same problem. :( Spotify sounds like it could be good, but I quit Facebook after having a bad experience. Never again!

  23. Anyone with issues with the proxy should try this one instead, https://www.proxy-service.de/
    its been working for me

  24. rippt

So every time I click the “More” button in the bottom right it keeps bringing me right back to the registration page to enter my “username” and “password”. Any ideas or has the link been removed?

  25. rippt

nvm helpful guy is very helpful

  26. Kyle

Thanks for this guide if it still works!

For those who are not spiritually asleep FaceBook is going to be a major lead for the One World System to spy on what you say and they will use it to track you for political and religious reasons.

(Example if you are a Christian or Muslim and stand up to The Beast as carrying a bible or a copy of the Koran will be outlawed in the system and may result in death depending on the country you’re in and level of enforcement)

All the pieces are in place which all we need major disasters with people begging for a savior whom willl rescue them all for free.

  27. Kyle

The first few years of The Tribulation as the bible puts it will be great as people will love the Antichrist in the artificially created peace.

  28. Kyle

Nope. Your guide does NOT work anymore. I type in all the details including the post code and it puts me in a loop going back to the sign in page.

I think they discovered the hole. :(

    I’ll try the Gmail idea.

  29. Still working here. Have you tried the other proxy as well?

  30. bendieckman

    thanks for the guide!
We just canceled our Facebook account (which we opened to use Spotify!)

  31. AJ

Just followed the instructions and worked great. Didn’t even have to enter Paypal password, and it still works.

  32. 1llko

Thank you very much!! …K Facebook!!
