My Zimbalam statements for Oktober show a nice rate of €0.0051 (about $.0066) for all Spotify streams. In November the rate per stream drops to € 0.0040 ((about $.0052). Nothing really new, the rate has been rather steady over 2012. 71 cent streams? The December data however are astonishing. All kinds of rates from € [...]

New data. The rate per stream is still about $0.005. Here is the Google spreadsheet with their streaming data. The developments over the last two years:  Spotify grows, still the [...]

Just two days ago I informed you about an interesting experiment by Shannon Hurley. Guess what happened today? Shannon removed the playlist from her website. End of the experiment. What can I say? What is this with artists and Spotify?

A few weeks ago I wrote an article called: Low streaming revenues: a self-fulfilling prophecy? Shannon Hurley was named an example of an artists who complains but doesn’t do a thing to promote her music on Spotify. I had a pleasant and interesting discussion with Shannon Hurley on this subject. The outcome is even better. Shannon [...]

Ever wondered how many times a song was played on Spotify? The new artist page on Facebook has a module that shows the number of total plays for five of an artist’s most popular songs. 1,7 million plays for Rolling In The Deep doesn’t seem that much, so this must be the number of plays [...]

The per stream rate has improved a bit. 0.38 Euro cent (0.47 US dollar cent) over January, February was good for 0.41 Euro cent (0.51 US dollar cent) per stream. In March the rate slipped a little to 0.4 Euro cent (0.5 US dollar cent). Here [...]

You may have seen the graph showing how much streams/sales an artist needs to earn US monthly minimum wage? The one with the big pink bubbles? The information is rather outdated, but people keep referring to it. Spotify pays more per stream now. I have asked Information Is Beautiful to update the graph. No response [...]

Can Spotify streams really hurt sales?

Labels like ST Holdings pulling their music from Spotify and big acts like Adele, Coldplay and The Black Keys not releasing their latest albums on Spotify. What’s going on? The reason for this anti-streaming position is obvious: they all think streaming hurts sales. Is Spotify the new enemy after years of putting the blame on [...]

What Spotify really pays

You can find them all over the internet. Rumours, assumptions, wild guesses and theories about what Spotify pays to artists. Remember the Lady Gaga story? She received $167 for 1 million plays. But how reliable is this information? I contacted labels, artists, collecting societies and Spotify to find out the truth but no one was [...]
